May I say, the new skylight really brings the ship together? I've never been one for stars as a design, but I think it works here. What does everyone else think?

[ During the times when Garion's powers are returned to him, he's taken to being productive. Oh, he's not about to make himself the size of a mountain and start tearing the ship apart; he's too Sendarian for that, and without a plan on what to do for all the kids around here, further damage is entirely out the window.

But that doesn't mean he isn't taking advantage.

Hence why one might see a shadow moving oddly along the edges of the hallways or against the sections of burned out ship that hide its darkness. It's headed for one very specific place, and one very specific man. He should have plenty of time to get this done. ]

[ While things are still very touchy, Garion's an incredibly sneaky man despite his size.

...probably something to do with being partially raised by a Drasnian spy prince. That, or the fact that he occasionally turns into a tiny, easy to miss, bunny.

Which is how he gets to Taylor, a smile on his face as he holds up a small, loose-woven cage full of butterflies the likes of which even Taylor has never seen. Their wings are a beautiful gray that shimmers blue and green and pink like a pastel oil slick depending on the shift of light. ]

If he sees Iris, he'll make the same offer. Hopefully, she'll be unstuck at the same time he is.]

[ Garion's around like he's always around, with a priority on making sure none of the kids get hurt even if there's a few of them he can't stand. But any Assistant who tries to handle him might find the idea ill-fated, even if power caps are working properly. He's had to do things sneakily before. And he's better at it than that farmboy face would lead you to believe. ]

You know what, I like the stars, but I have to say I'm feeling a little unsure about how fast people are escalating here.

There's a middle ground between swallowing whatever bullstuff you're fed and breaking things just to watch 'em burn, you know?

I would have to agree. It's always good to make sure you want to do something before you do something you can't undo.

Which is why I didn't blow that hole in the ship. Never even occurred to me.

But... things are changing around here. And changing quick. I can't say I hate that. Or that it wasn't necessary.

I don't disagree that things needed to change. But I think now is the time when we need to pause and take stock. Before we change things we can't fix in a hurry.

No argument from me. Just careful not to invalidate people's frustrations. You folks have been here for a few weeks, but there's quite a few of us who've been stuck here for a long time.

And 'settle down' is a sentiment that's been ill-used around here. I'm sure you can figure out what I'm saying.

Fair enough. I'm personally on the side of not blowing up the ship I'm on unless I'm real darn sure there's a replacement right around the corner -- I think we can all get behind that particular plan, yeah?

I think you're underestimating some people's feelings. But like I said: there's a reason I never blew a hole in the ship the last few years.

Was there something specific you were looking to do towards that whole 'calm the masses' goal?

I'm thinking the first thing we need is some open discussion. Get people talking about what bothers them the most, and we can start making strides towards dealing with it.

And have you spoken to the Nurse or the Assistants on that score?

Logistics. Asking people to speak up or speak out without buy in from the ones in power is just asking people to be vulnerable.

No matter what just happened, that's still the case.

I'm not asking for anyone to speak to the Nurse or to the Assistants. I'm asking for them to talk to me -- and I'm willing to be the guy who brings up the issues they've got.

They still have to talk to talk to you, Yunlan. And words can, and have been, grounds for punishment.

You've no doubt heard about how graduation tends to go here: there's not a lot of trust that she, or the people who enforce her rules, will deal fairly. Or keep the bargain where it was struck.

That's part of what needs addressing.

That's a pretty darn valid concern if you ask me.

But someone has to take the first step towards starting a conversation, you know?

It's almost like we're talking now. And I'm telling you issues I have. Perhaps even providing an example here on the network so people can see it.

It sure is! And I don't mean to downplay your concerns. But before I go off with a wild hair up my butt, let me ask you one thing, Garion: what kind of reassurance would you accept from the Nurse? You have been here longer than I have, after all.

She hides behind her silence, so a spoken guarantee would go a long way, I think. A given promise.

Words have power if spoken with intent.

Specifically, a promise to hear out our concerns and requests?

That bar's a little too low.

A promise that addresses one of the most abusive parts of how she does business:

No more dragging people back here.

I'm fully on board with that particular stipulation, Garion, but I have to ask: is this the promise that would get you on board with negotiating, or is this your highest priority for the outcome of said negotiation?

There's no point to talking if nothing will change. Like I said: all it will do otherwise is provide the reasoning for retaliation.

If there isn't a promise that something will change, then I'm not on board with negotiation. And that's my highest priority for the outcome.

[This is a shitty-ass way to start negotiating, but a decent way to get an excuse for the other person being the one who wasn't willing to come to the table, in Yunlan's opinion.

But it's also a stipulation that Garion's free to make, as dubious as Yunlan might believe it is.]

Well then. I'll see what I can do you for.

[ As far as he's concerned, he and others have already paid time to a deceptive bargain. Good faith has to be proven at this point, and concretely. ]
